Help for ADD   ADHD Teens

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are a commonly diagnosed disorders in adolescents. In fact, ADD is the most commonly diagnosed disorder of childhood, affecting approximately 3% - 5% of all school-aged children. Unfortunately, often difficult children are incorrectly diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. Every child suspected of having ADD/ADHD should be carefully evaluated to find other potential factors contributing to their behavior problems. This is especially important before placing the child on medication. Even when diagnosis is made correctly, it is important to remember that medication is not the exclusive (or even necessarily the most effective) treatment available.

Often teens with ADD/ADHD have other developmental or behavioral problems that should be addressed/treated in conjunction with the underlying disorder. For instance, a change of environment and counseling have proven to be valuable ways to address these problems. Too often these other behavior problems are not given the attention they deserve and it keeps the teen from becoming as successful as they otherwise could be. Children can learn how to manage this problem and successfully master self-control.

Alternative treatment programs for ADD/ADHD have impressive success rates. Parents should consider the individual needs of their child when deciding on an appropriate treatment plan.
